It also depends on the time of year. If you have a female that turns 8 months in Sept-Dec, they typically will not cycle until the following spring, delaying their first cycle. None of my cats cycle from end of Aug through early January. It's peaceful in those months :)
Solstice was in heat from mid-January through April this year. A friend of mine was trying to show her but every show she went to she would come back in heat. She just wants babies.

Oh Simbakui, I bet the scent of whole males brought her into heat, yikes!
Zofia's just turned 8 months old, but no heat yet (shhh! Let's keep it that way for awhile). She's only around 2 fixed females, so that may or may not help. THe two cats, a blue point siamese and Stephie's mom who sneak into the backyard to eat mice, they're both fixed.
Of course, I NEVER allow any cat outdoors, as is my policy, and no indoor/outdoor cats where I live.

The scent of whole males at shows definitely brings them in heat. When I am showing a kitten a lot, I am pretty certain she is going to start cycling by 8 months old.

Sure sounds about right - guess there's an upside to not showing Zofia as a kitten, since she was fearful of others. Now, she wants everyone to pet her.

Of course, Zofia has her own mind...she's now in her first heat; she confused, doesn't understand the position system, and just flops either over on my foot -
- or MY NECK! GACK!
At least she had the decency to stay out of heat, while I had ze broken neck. Now, seeing what I'm going to do - and see if I can find a handsome stud for my darling.
