What Is A Veterinary Specialist? To become a specialist, a veterinarian pursues additional training after graduation from veterinary school. This training usually involves a one year internship and a two or three year residency in their area of interest. They must then publish in a recognized veterinary journal, and must pass a certifying examination in their specialty. Upon passing the examination, the veterinarian becomes a Diplomate in the "college" of their specialty. A veterinarian who has completed all of the necessary training to become a specialist and has only to take the certifying examination is considered "board-eligible." Upon taking and passing this test he/she has become a board certified specialist.
