Would you recommend your breeder?

This thread is for positive comments only. I have my own share of horror stories in the past 30 plus years. However, my last 2 experiences have been wonderful!

I highly recommend Binky's breeder "SimbaKui". Binky is healthy and has a sweet disposition. Tracy has become my friend as well. I tease her about being her "groupie." I travel to cat shows just to visit with her. She has an outstanding reputation in the world of silvers and goldens. Tracy has numerous awards and is first class all the way.

In fact I adored Binky so much that I recently went back and gave his Mom, Alexus, a home with us!  I just adore her too.

Joane, Tracy is one of the very few breeders that has demonstrated her commitment to quality breeding.  I strongly feel that a breeder's cattery website is a reflection of themselves.  And attention to details are very much needed.  I came across literally hundred's of cattery sites that gave me absolutely no information at all.  They didn't even cover the basics except that their litters are raised underfoot within a home setting.

Before you and I even knew one another, Tracy is only 1 out of 2 breeders that I saved her website within my favorites.  I remember that she didn't have any litters at that time.  This was dating back to 2006.

Hindsight being 20/20; I should have probably waited.

Yes Celeste, you know the inside story on all of my heartbreaks. Tracy is one in a million as I always tell her. She restored my faith in breeders and has also become a friend of mine over the years.

I've also experienced horrors over the past 20 years, with even "famous" breeders.

Found out that simply going to cat shows and listening, you learn much!  Unfortunately, nearly all the breeders at the cat show said that she wasn't good.

I'd recommend where the girl I have today - unfortunately, unless she replaces her Studs, she and her daughter are out of business, due to fire loss of 10 out of 16 cats.

I'm going to try and find a Mentor, or see if someone part of CFA & Tica would be willing to take me under their wing; I pray I can do it right this time, and starting off with a girl without genetic defects and not line bred is a good start!

It sounds like you are starting out on the right foot as they say.  You are starting with a healthy cat. Good luck to you!

It could also be a reflection on how savvy they are with a computer.

I know some very prestigious catteries that don't even have websites. And while everyone can't afford professional pictures of their cats, the cats and kittens presented on a website should be clean and healthy looking at the very least, I do believe that is a reflection of the breeder.

I think most people looking at websites go directly to the kitten available pages. Show accomplishments and pedigrees and other information are more for other breeders. While we would like to think that all pet buyers are informed and well educated about the breed, most are not.  Most breeders already know the cattery and may just go to look at pedigrees they may want to add to their own cattery.

That said I think most websites are set up to be directed at their target audience, be it pet buyers or other breeders.

Thank you Terri for mentioning this!  It is remarkable on how many I have educated so far with future plans to even educate more.  This will be one less problem for breeders to worry about!

Education doesn't necessarily take place within a Forum setting unfortunately.  It is not only single task oriented but it be too tedious and time consuming.
I learned this the hard way! :wink

I would also like to see each state adopt a Lemon Law policy regarding animals. In this way, the pet buyer that is uninformed has protection guaranteed to them. And even the well informed can be taken by misrepresentation.

Joane, I'm rather pleased that you brought this up.  Only a couple of months ago I was speaking to someone who had an issue with a breeder out of New Jersey.

Apparently this breeder's contract indicated that the cat she purchased which was ill and died would be replaced when possible by the breeder.

She was extremely happy to be informed that the state of New Jersey has implemented a strong Pet Lemon Law which covers in-home hobby breeders.

There is no private contract that can supercede state implemented law.  All she needed to do was file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office (consumer division).  She was entitled to be reimbursed her purchase price and also any medical expenses incurred not to exceed the original purchase price of the cat.

She was very pleased to say the least! :smile

I had to use the Pet Lemon Law once myself. I was grateful for it too. Breeders have protection because they require the purchaser to sign their contract. It only seems fair the consumer should have the same protection provided by the law.
