Maryland crab soupIt's still really cold and windy in "the land of pleasant living" the nickname for Maryland. So I have a big pot of Maryland crab soup cooking on the stove. I believe you Southerners call it "she" crab soup. Something to warm us up today. We had snow flurries.
I also have a chicken in the oven. Wish you could smell everything cooking!

I will be right over! I will not acknowledge the absense of knowledge I have when it comes to southern food. But I do know what grits are now? A few southern members straighten me out here.

I wonder if that is what my Dad used to cook when I was a kid. It was, if I remember right, crabs cooked in sort of a spaghetti sauce. Loved it as a kid - don't eat seafood anymore. Must be the day for baked chicken - that's what I am making for dinner to. Just sounded good with the rain and snow falling. I wanted comfort food.

It is a vegetable soup with a tomato broth and crab meat seasoned with something called "Old Bay." On the spicy side Lynda. Very similar to your Manhattan clam chowder.

Sounds good and I know what Old bay is since it's in every seafood recipe.
Sorry you need warm food "up there."

I make a cream of crab soup too. Very much like a lobster bisque only made with lump crab meat and a dash of sherry.
Have any of you ever had steamed hard crabs? Or crab cakes?

Yes, steamed hard crabs are great! I had them and then wanted to make them myself, but I haven't seen any good crabs that I can buy around here unless you drive for hours.
You north easterners seem to have the best crabs, oysters, lobsters, ect. I was so disappointed in the seafood here, at least the kind you can buy at the stores.
That sounds so good to me Joane. Can I come to your house?

Absolutely! Come for dinner any time! Living by the Chesapeake Bay means wonderful seafood. The seafood isn't the same in Florida. However, you are very well known for your steaks. Great cattle country! And please bring up some of your honey bell oranges!!!

I'm coming over for crabs and crab cakes.
As for the steaks. Well, I only get a good steak at a good restaurant. I am from Illinois where I could go to a butcher and get good beef. I have not found it here in Florida. Of course, if I wanted to drive an hour, I have been told I could find some good steaks. Perhaps it's just our area, but the local grocery store steak is not what I would call good. Sometimes you get lucky, but I am not used to that.
I will take Illinois beef anytime. Now I am hungry!
BTW, our favorite restaurant has raised their best steak to $42. Now, that is crazy!

Forty-two dollars for a steak! Maybe I should reconsider staying right where I am. I do feel tho' due the size of our state that we are over populated with restaurants. I can't understand how they all stay in business.

A PS on my steak answer. The place where they have the expensive steak is at Disney's Flying Fish, so of course the price is higher. We can get better prices at other restaurants for a good steak. Don't want anyone thinking they are all that expensive.
My main complaint is the steaks you want to buy and cook on your own grill. They just don't seem to be as good.
And of course we are overrun by restaurants too since it is a big tourist place and there are some great ones.

Well Ellie, at least there is reason for your restaurant population. The same applies here. There are some famous Italian restaurants in the heart of downtown Providence which will leave wallets on the light side.
I used to have some of my vendors that would take me there during the holiday season. The food was so rich no matter what I selected that it would never agree with me.
The Capital Grill is very good for steaks here. Do you have one down in Florida? They have a climate controlled room where you can see the aged beef.

Don't they have butcher shops there, Ellie?

I missed this when I had the "leaky beak" yesterday.
I have not seen a Capital Grill around here so far Celeste. It sounds wonderful.
Cat, there are butchers but most of those places are not at all close to us.
We have some butchers here here of course, but I'm not sure how good they are and the ads are not in English, so I would rather pass on by. Plus I am not sure what they are passing off as beef.
