Cat 'Throws a Bloodclot"I am petsitting two kitties this weekend and the other day their owner called and thought her cat had a stroke. Oddly enough, she moved here but hasn't contacted a vet yet. I am shocked since that was the first thing we did.
A vet who lives here came and said it is a common thing in older cats to have a blood clot go through the leg arteries. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Now I am praying it doesn't happen again this weekend, but I have numbers to call just in case and they only have a 5 hours drive home if needed.
I wondered if anyone has heard of this.

Has the vet prescribed anything for this? All you can do Ellie is do the best you can. She was rather fortunate since blood clots can be fatal.

I am going over to talk to her today. No, the vet says it can happen because of poor circulation in older cats and suggested rubbing the back legs to keep circulation going. When she gets back both of her cats are going to my vet and having complete tests. She feels bad that she hadn't done it before but like most cats, they seemed to be just fine.

Gee..I'm not sure what doctors are doing these days relative to this. Princess back 20 years ago was given 1/4 of an aspirin every 3-4 days to keep her blood thinner. This was to prevent clots.
Let us know after she sees your doctor. Things change and what was a good thing back then may not be good now after further research.

Good luck Ellie and you are such a great friend to take on this responsibility. I know you are worried sick something will happen.
Spunky took baby aspirin twice weekly to prevent blood clots. Tuesdays and Fridays. I still remember that very well. He took it along with tenormin for his HCM.
Good luck again to the little kitty!

Ellie I just came back from Dr. B's since Josh had an appointment this afternoon. I was worried about his leg injury and whether or not he could have formed a clot. I was told clots develop with cats that have heart conditions. Hence the reason Princess was placed on aspirin therapy along with heart meds.
